This economy model is about as close to plug-and-play as a turntable can get. Belt-driven, with a three-speed (33-45-78) electronically-controlled motor, it comes with an Ortofon OM-10 pickup already installed. THE TD-190-2

For a little more money, this model gains in both sophistication and performance. It has a suspended subchassis and a fiberglass subplatter. GOLDRING 1012GX. You can get your Thorens turntable with a line contact stylus, which plays the groove wall rather than a single point on each wall, as an elliptical stylus does. The 1012GX has a Gyger-2 stylus, which gives smooth extended high frequencies, low distortion and reproduces a highly detailed and dynamic sound. Our usual price is $379, but if we send it to you at the same time as a TD-190-2, you can get both for just $1020.

Or get it with the Goldring 1042. The extended groove contact of its Gyger-S diamond gives the 1042 unsurpassed resolution of the fine groove modulations, producing an exceptionally detailed, smooth and musical sound. Our usual price is $475, but get it at the same time as your TD-190-2, and pay just $1125. For a little extra, we'll install it for you and check alignment (and you still keep the old cartridge). THE TD-295 Mark 4

It costs more than the other two, but the gain in performance is dramatic. The jeavy plinth and the massive rubber feet isolate the table from footfalls better than most other schemes. The synchronous motor is electronically-controlled. The tone arm looks like a standalone arm that could cost as much as this whole turntable, and for the most part its performance is on a par with its appearance. The massive non-magnetic platter is dynamically balanced, something you seldom see at this price. The included cartridge is an Audio-Technica AT95E. There are output jacks at the rear, so that you can use the enclosed interconnect, or the interconect of your choice.

GOLDRING EROICA H. Go to a moving coil cartridge. The Eroica H cartridge uses a Gyger II line contact stylus. This "H" model is high output, so that it will work with a conventional MM phono preamp, and does not require a transformer or a high-sensitivity MC preamp. The Eroica's usual price is $599, but get the Thorens TD-295 plus the Eroica H for $1449. Installation is available too (see below).

GOLDRING ELITE. This is a detuned version of the superlative Goldring Excel which remains one of our two reference cartridges (when it was discontinued it cost $3000. The Elite is a low-output (0.5 mV) MC type, with (of course) a line-contact stylus. The coils are wound from pure silver wire. Its very low inductance gives it extended frequency response to 30 kHz. Our usual price for the Elite is $749, but get is at the same time as the TD-295 for just $1625 total. installation is available (see below).
