Pauline Viardot-Garcia
She was a renown 19th Century soprano of international renown, and (being a woman) a minor composer of art songs. There is a priceless collection of her songs on this magnificent disc, sung by Isabel Bayrakdarian. "Stunning" hardly seems an adequate adjective. For artistic and sonic reasons, this one will never be far from our CD player.

Christoph Graupner, in his day, was more appreciated than Bach, so how to explain that his marvellous music has been so long forgotten. Geneviève Soly, who rediscovered him, leads her group, Les idées heureuses, in some gorgeous music from the heart of the German Baroque era.

Bach Sonatas for violin & harpsichord, vol. 1
No ordinary violinist is James Ehnes, and his fans -- count us in -- will need no further invitation. These appealing trio sonatas have surprising emotion bubbling under the structured surface, and both Ehnes and excellent harpsichordist Luc Beauséjour bring it forth. lovely!

Romantic Pieces
How does James Ehnes manage to get such a sweet sound from the upper register of his violin? Granted, he plays a Stradivarius, but he's not the only one with a Strad, yet his tone is unique. On this disc he plays Czech pieces from Smetana, Dvorak and Janacek. The playing is as glorious as the tone, and the sound is suitably sumptuous. Free bonus: Analekta's 10th sampler is included at no extra cost. As if you needed a reason to buy it!

French Showpieces
The sensational young Canadian violinist James Ehnes has been collecting superlatives, and he deserves them here too: a collection of pieces by Saint-Saens, Berlioz, Chausson, Debussy, Milhaud and Massenet (the Meditation from Thais). Accompanied by l'Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, Ehnes plays with a sweet tone that must be heard to be believed. The fine sound helps, of course.

Concertos: Mathieu, Addinsell, Gershwin
Those last two concertos need no introduction, but André Mathieu might. Once considered the Quebec Mozart, André Mathieu wrote this astonishing concerto in his teens. He would later burn out, but this concerto lets us guess what we lost. Click here to read the UHF review.

The Duo Similia is made up of flutist Nadia Labrie and her twin sister Annie, who plays guitar. They play gorgeous arrangements of familiar classical melodies, including Mozart, Massenet, Elgar, Villa-Lobos, and even Jacques Ibert, who isn't heard often enough. A delight.

Handel
Superb soprano Karina Gauvin is joined by the Toronto chamber ensemble Tafelmusik in a series of glowing excerpts from Handel’s “Alcina” and “Agrippina.” The sound is smooth and lifelike, with an acute sense of place.

Little Notebook of Anna Magdalana Bach
From the notebook of Bach’s 2nd wife, more than 30 delightful pieces, most by Bach himself. Soprano Karina Gauvin’s magnificent voice is mated to Luc Beauséjour’s excellent harpsichord work. The sound is deep, detailed and warm, truly of audiophile quality.

Vivaldi: Motets for Soprano
In this eagerly awaited new disc by wonderful soprano Karina Gauvin, she tackles the gorgeous but very difficult vocal music of Vivaldi: two motets and a psalm. It is a moving interpretation, on this jewel of a recording.

Villa-Lobos
A dozen Études, some Preludes and a Chôros from this Brazilian composer, played by Canadian guitarist Alvaro Pierri. He is one of the best guitarists in the world, and few versions of this fascinating music can hold a candle to his. Very good recording, with fine natural balance.
